You will be aware that the Gunthorpe has, over the past few years, had a number of highways issues and requests for improvements on our roads, many of which are specifically mentioned in the Parish Plan see here .  The Parish Council has had frequent and numerous communications with the County Council in an attempt to address these issues and requests and it is clear that where a solution is either essential or cheap and easy to implement, NCC has been very helpful and efficient.  However if a problem is either expensive to address and / or does not appear to be the cause of one or more accidents, then a solution will certainly not be implemented.

Some recent correspondence is given here

The issues are described here together with the current status:

  1. Access to A6097 at the north end of Main Street is a major problem - residents would like to see traffic lights installed (a mini roundabout was also considered a possibility) - NCC say 'no' - either solution would lead to an increase in accidents and cost was a consideration.
  2.  Junction improvements on approach road to bridge needed and improvements to road needed generally - the approach road is the area where the Parish Council has, out of necessity, spent the greatest amount of time and, most unfortunately, had limited success:
    • after 2½ years NCC have finally agreed to a solution for the many misaligned yellow lines on the slip road.  Next year (we hope), when weather permits, they will be resurfacing the road and repainting the yellow correctly.  This will of course address other issues - the poor road surface and minor cracks.  No date has been given for this work.
    • Double white lines and lights on the bridge - these requests were put to NCC more than a year ago, but unfortunately seem to have been ignored by them.  The Parish Council are to pursue.
    •  Overhanging vegetation, especially trees - this is a recurring problem that is generally addressed promptly by NCC, although in one case Cllr Peter Platten and other residents, tired of waiting for the job to be done, did it themselves!
    • "Junction improvements on approach road" - so far no specific improvements have been proposed or considered.  However, the problem of the road itself being so narrow has been considered.  The possibility of traffic lights, as with the Main Street / A6097 junction, has been dismissed.  A weight limit has been requested but this is one of two cases where NCC have continually prevaricated, saying neither yes nor no and withholding any timescale or progress report on their deliberations.  The Parish Council have agreed to ask the views of residents and businesses in the village on making the road one-way.  A individual NCC officer dismissed the proposal, but it is felt that this was without authority.
    • GPC reported the perceived poor condition of the supporting embankment and road edges.  NCC responded, after more than a year and several meetings and requests, by inspecting the road and confirming their belief that (other than surface dressing) it was not in need of repair or maintenance.  GPC are in the process of obtaining an independent report.
    • Slow signs and road marking along Trentside - these are currently being reviewed by NCC.
